Wednesday, May 24, Ukrainian football club “Shakhtar Donetsk celebrates its 87th anniversary.

“The organizer and the first coach of the Donetsk team was Nikolay Naumov. Even before the start of World War II, the Pitmen made their debut in the Premier League. After the liberation of Donbass from the Nazi troops, Captain Georgy Bikezin assembled a new team, which in 1951 won bronze medals in the USSR championship. In 1961 and 1962 Shakhtar won their first trophies – the USSR Cups. The 1970-1980s became a bright period in the history of the club, when the Orange-and-Blacks won the championship three times (1975, 1978, 1979), won two more Cups (1980, 1983) and the USSR Super Cup (1984).

The debut trophy at the time of independence was the Cup of Ukraine in the 1994/95 season, but for a long time it seemed impossible to encroach on the title. Everything changed in 1996, when Rinat Akhmetov became the president of FC Shakhtar. Since then, the countdown of the “golden era” began in the club’s history that continues to this day. During this time, the team became the champion of Ukraine 13 times, won 13 national Cups and 9 Super Cups of Ukraine, won the biggest victory in modern Ukrainian football – won the UEFA Cup (2009).

Today, Shakhtar is the leading club in Ukraine, a permanent member of the UEFA Champions League, a team that is known and respected throughout the football world. The mission of the club is to represent the country in the international arena, as well as to do everything to help Ukraine and the Ukrainian people win our main victory.

Congratulations to veterans of different generations, players and coaches, employees, club president Rinat Akhmetov and all fans on the 87th anniversary of Shakhtar! Each of you has made a significant contribution to the achievement of the team and is involved in the Pitmen’s success story. All of you will always be part of a big “miner’s” family!

Happy birthday, Shakhtar!, says the Pitmen’s statement on the club’s official website.
